Sydney FC coach Patrick Kisnorbo is set for a highly anticipated A-League elimination final against his former club, Melbourne Victory, at AAMI Park this Saturday night. Kisnorbo, who controversially departed Victory after just seven games, returns to face a potentially hostile reception from fans in what promises to be a fiery "Big Blue" clash. This pivotal match will determine which club advances in the finals series.
Despite the expected animosity from Melbourne Victory supporters, Kisnorbo remains unfazed. "It doesn’t bother me, to be honest," stated the Sydney FC boss, who left Victory in December 2024 to become an assistant coach at Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos before a brief stint as head coach. He emphasized his focus on the game: "Whatever happens on the outside, for me, it doesn’t matter. I’m just going to concentrate on the occasion and how we play."
Kisnorbo reiterated his commitment to his current squad, stating, "The main thing is concentrating on our players and what we do in the game." He acknowledged the significance of the encounter, adding, "It’s a great occasion to play in, and obviously two big clubs with amazing history. I’ve experienced a few big rivalries in Australia – it’s great to be part of."
Melbourne Victory coach Arthur Diles acknowledged that Kisnorbo's presence would add "a bit of juice and a bit of spite" to the contest. However, Diles dismissed the idea that Kisnorbo's return would serve as a primary motivator for his players, many of whom were coached by Kisnorbo last season. He stated, "If we have to use that motivation as a squad, then something’s wrong for me."
Diles clarified that Kisnorbo's name had not been a topic of discussion within the playing group or coaching staff, viewing the past as irrelevant to the upcoming final. "That was a long time ago now. We move forward from that. He’s got to worry about his team, I’ve got to worry about my team, and may the best team win," Diles asserted, emphasizing a professional approach to the crucial match.
Melbourne Victory is expected to receive a significant boost with the return of Spanish star Juan Mata to the starting line-up. The veteran playmaker made his comeback from a broken elbow by coming off the bench in Victory’s recent 2-0 win over Western Sydney last Saturday, indicating his readiness for the high-stakes elimination final against Sydney FC.
